Recently, I was called a “treasure of expertise and knowledge” in a class on fundraising that I led.

Philanthropy is a tradition intended to provide continuity across generations. We see its impact in historic preservation, social services, and many other sectors. Fundraising and development for a nonprofit, whatever its size, is a Herculean endeavor in a world of change.

I have led fundraising and business development for 20 years. I have also studied the history of patronage in the arts for 6 years. I understand the big picture of our industry and the history behind its evolution.

We confront a world of constant change, in our communities. We can seek inspiration from those who have come before us. And in those moments of doubt in how we will move our work forward, we can find strength in these stories.

Our cities and towns are teeming with the legacies of those who came before us, of patrons: the historic building that houses your fave coffee shop, the public library where you take your kids… Someone thought that building or that community service was worth saving. And now that tradition is manifesting through you.
